Thus I Heard stands as a profound work in Zuo Zhengyao’s practice, merging Chinese ink aesthetics with sacred textual ritual. In its creation, the artist handwrites the complete Diamond Sutra, then washes over the text in layers of ink, partially erasing it. On top of these fading remnants, he writes once more—layer upon layer—so that the final image is simultaneously a full scripture and a contemporary ink painting, blurring the line between writing and visual form.
