Originally named the Niagara Clipper, the vessel underwent a transformation and was rebranded as Enhydra, aligning with its focus on research and environmental exploration. This shift underscores the vessel’s commitment to advancing marine science and fostering educational opportunities.

In 2022, the Enhydra secured funding from the state of California to undergo a comprehensive repowering initiative. This project involved the installation of two new engines and two generators, a crucial step to ensure compliance with the California Air Resources Board (CARB) Type 3 Regulations.
