SAVE OUR HOME

No man ever steps in the same river twice, for it’s not the same river. The philosopher may have wanted to say that people change and that time runs by rivers, but the most probable explanation is definitely that he sees the river as life. All the rivers run downhill towards the confluence and when you go uphill, you get to their springs, and it’s been like that since the beginning of time. The laws of nature rule their flows and people are there to follow. Rivers are certainly older for there’s no life without them and it’s not us, currently on stage, that rivers will be gone with. They will never be the same without us because what once was stays forever, like a continuous flow, like a memory.                     
People who know rivers say that they have their own temper and that, except for secrets, they won’t take anything from people. Isn’t that human? You can take everything from a man, but you can’t force them into taking anything. Why then such behaviour? Rivers are not here for our waste, and not that waste is some secret. What doesn’t sink will turn into a flood of rage one day. This way or the other, rivers run through our veins and as we can recognise ourselves in them, they can transform in us. I guess it’s God’s will that the sun cannot rise twice in the same day. Once baptised in the river, always baptised. Is it then our purge if we dump waste into rivers? Will we turn back time if we see the same waste again tomorrow? Will we live forever if we poison the life of other creatures?
Missionary Jovan Memedovic has seen the world by following rivers in our ancestors’ footsteps trying to show us the path the philosopher whose eyes rivers reflected in walked. A legend says that he reached the end of the world and in a message from a bottle found a magic formula for making new things from garbage, and river fairies, to express gratitude, used it to make his portrait and let it float on rivers till the end of time. The story goes that there, among his own people in Bajina Basta, he used to show a piece of paper which read recycling – purge. It was signed Pianist. Was that the message from the bottle or if that Pianist guy had anything to do with fairies will remain a secret. But it doesn’t matter. What matters is that rivers run clean. They know.
